着 zhe - Present Continuing State

1. 着 can be attached to Verbs indicating a posture or manner in which an activity is being carried out. E.g: lying down, kneeling, standing, wearing, etc. The pattern is: Verb-着

S V Verb-着 O verb phrase
xǐhuan tīngzhe yīnyuè pǎobù.
喜欢 听着 音乐 跑步。

I like listening to music while running.

xíguàn dàizhe kǒuzhào chūmén.
习惯 戴着 口罩 出门。

She is used to wearing a mask to go out.

gēge xǐhuan tánzhe jítā chànggē.
哥哥 喜欢 弹着 吉他 唱歌。

My elder brother likes singing songs while playing guitar.

2. 着 can also indicate a continuing state. E.g: waiting, holding, sleeping, etc.

tā yìzhí zàilóuxià děngzhe péngyǒu.

他 一直 在楼下 等着 朋友。

He has been waiting for his friend at downstairs.

dìdi shǒulǐ názhe yígèpíngguǒ.

弟弟 手里 拿着 一个苹果。

My younger brother is holding an apple in his hand.

chángshíjiānzuòzhe duì shēntǐ bùhǎo.

长时间坐着 对 身体 不好。

Sitting for a long time is not good for one’s health.
