Suggestions & Requests

In the last lesson, we have learned how to make a command in mandarin Chinese. In Chinese, “softeners” are added in order to soften the force of the command, hence making it more like a suggestion or request. Some common “softeners” include: 吧/请/好不好.

1. 吧 (ba) is often added to the end of the sentence to indicate gentle suggestions and requests.

Command + 吧

tiānhēile, kuàihuíjiā ba!

天黑了,快回家 吧。

It’s getting dark. Let’s go home.

xiàbān yìqǐqùchī huǒguō ba!

下班 一起去吃 火锅 吧!

Let’s go to eat hot pot together after work!

2. 请 (qǐng) is added before a command.

请 + Command

qǐng (nǐ) bǎhuà shuōqīngchǔ!

请 (你) 把话 说清楚!

Please make your words clear!

qǐng (dàjiā) bǎochíānjìng!

请 (大家) 保持安静!

Everybody, please keep quiet!

3. 好不好 (hǎobùhǎo) is often added to the end of the sentence to indicate gentle requests. We always combine 好不好 and 请 together.

请 + Command , 好不好?

qǐng nǐ shuō màn yìdiǎn’r hǎobùhǎo?

请 你 说 慢 一点, 儿好不好?

Could you speak slowly, please?

qǐng dàjiā xiào kāixīn yìdiǎn’ r hǎobùhǎo?

请 大家 笑 开心 一点儿, 好不好?

Would you please smile with some happiness?
