Comparing 一样 (to be alike)

To express “two things or two persons having the same features”, insert 跟 between the two items being compared, and follow them with 一样 (yíyànɡ). Stative verbs can be added after 一样 to indicate in what way two items are similar.

The bananas are as expensive as the apples.

zhōnɡɡuórén ɡēn měiɡuórén yíyànɡ yǒuhǎo.

Chinese people are as friendly as Americans.

jīntiān de tiānqì ɡēn zuótiān (de tiānqì) yíyànɡ rè.
今天的天气 昨天(的天气) 一样 热。

The weather today is as hot as it is yesterday.

A similar pattern can be used when there is no need to so specific as to the items being compared. An adverb can be added before 一样 to state how similar or different the items are.

wǒmende shǒujī yíyànɡ.
我们的手机 一样。

Our cell phones are the same.

nà liǎnɡɡè ɡuójiāde wénhuà hěnbù yíyànɡ.
那两个国家的文化 很不 一样。

The cultures of those two countries are very different.

zhè sānɡè jiǔbā chàbùduō yíyànɡ.
这三个酒吧 差不多 一样。

These three clubs are more or less the same.
