Possession 的 - 1

In English, there are several ways to show possessions. For example: using a possessive pronoun (my house), adding ’s to a Noun (the teacher’s book), or adding “of” between the modifier and the modified (a friend of Michael), etc. In Chinese, the particle "的" de is used to indicate possession. It is added to the pronoun/noun (as modifier), preceding the noun (as the modified).

Pronoun/Noun Noun Modified
de mínɡzi

my name

de pénɡyǒu

his friends

Normally only one "的" appears in a sentence and "的" is often omitted where there is a close personal relationship between the modifier and the modified. In the following examples, "的" is omitted from "我(的)妻子" and "他(的)爸爸"

wǒ qīzǐ de pénɡyǒu
我 妻子 朋友

my wife’s friends

tā bàbɑ de chē
她 爸爸

her father’s car
