给(gěi) Suffixed to Verbs

In the last few lessons, we covered 在 and 到 suffixed to verbs. In this lesson, we will take a look at another word 给gěi, which can also be used this way. The structure “Verb + 给 + Somebody” implies the meaning “to somebody”. The most common Verbs where 给gěi acts as a Verb-suffix are: 带dài/拿ná (to bring), 寄jì (to mail), 卖mài (to sell), 写xiě (to write), 租zū (to rent), 借jiè (to lend), 还huán (return something borrowed), 打电话dǎ diàn huà (to make a phone call), 送sòng (to give a gift), etc.

The Direct Object is usually transposed to the head of the sentence.
