多 (duō)

多 has the meaning of “over” or “more than” in Chinese. With different numbers preceding 多, the patterns are different.

1. Normally for numbers which end in 1 to 9, the pattern is:

liǎng kuài duō qián

more than two kuai (yuan)

duō xiǎoshí
小时

more than five hours

jīn duō zhūròu
猪肉

more than one jin of pork (1 jin = 0.5 kg)

2. Normally for numbers which end in a zero, the pattern is:

over twenty bottles of water

yìbǎi duō shuāng xié
一百

over one hundred pairs of shoes

wǔqiān duō míng xuéshēng
五千 学生

over five thousand students

sānwàn duō zhī xiǎoniǎo

over thirty thousand birds
